New York is putting on a lot of swank in its barber shops. The latest to open on Park Avenue in a $20,000 a year apartment house is done in black and white marble. In the manicure room three dashing blonds sit on one side and three equally dashing brunettes on the other. Their stalls are curtained with gold brocade and with the hidden lights surpass many scenes in the Follies. A secretarial gentleman greets patrons, who are received only by appointment. There are five barbers, who bring each implement of their profession from a room labeled “Sterilizing Laboratory.” But what makes one want to cry right out loud are the white cotton gloves that the shoe polishers use and which are discarded after each operation.
